Sutton Swimming Pool Project

SUTTON SWIMMING POOL PROJECT

In late January, we began a project up in Sutton, London. The existing garden was a standard patch of grass area with an outdated decking area and run down steps and retaining walls.

We began by excavating the area fully, digging out where the bottom of the swimming pool would be and the shelving for the metal panels to sit on. We used the extracted soil to build up the surrounding garden to a new height.

Once the area was fully dug out, it was time for the panels and steps to go into place and be bolted together. This is a time consuming process which needs to be done correctly in order to make sure the pool is properly square, upright, level and solid. With this completed, the legs can then be bolted on and concreted to secure the structure.

We next began to construct the block work for the retaining walls at the bottom end of the garden, as well as linking up pipework from the pool to the heater and pump house. We also moulded the base of the pool, creating the angled shelving and levelling out the bottom of the pool, before screeding it over with a sand/cement screed mix. We also put vertical plastic tubing in around the panels of the pool, which would be filled with concrete to provide vertical support.

Next we back filled the trench round the outside of the panels with the left over soil that we extracted from the swimming pool dig.

With the surrounding area now almost back up to pool height, we could concrete the surrounding area to provide a base for the paving. We also screwed on the skimmer and light faces to the inside of the pool, before starting to fit the liner.

We then faced the blockwork with bricks and created the stepped area up to the pool. With this complete, we could now start paving around the swimming pool.

With the paving laid in full slabs, we could then lay the coping stones around the edge of the pool, and proceed to cut and lay the curved slabs on the corners. With the area fully paved, we then grouted up the coping stones and paving perimeter with a white cement grout mix. We also then began to construct the top retaining wall area/steps, as well as filling the bottom area with wood bark, and constructing a sleeper barrier around the edge of the area.

Next all we had to do was small finishing touches, like laying the top step of the bottom area, laying the slabs along the top retaining wall, and astroturfing the poolside area.
